Rihanna (born Robyn Rihanna Fenty) is an Barbadian singer and actress who portrayed Marion Crane in the final season of Bates Motel

Biography[]

Early Life[]

She was born on February 20, 1988 in St. Michael on the island of Barbados. She attended Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School and Combermere High School, where she studied alongside future England cricketer Chris Jordan and future West Indies cricketer Kraigg Brathwaite. She was an army cadet in a sub-military programme and singer-songwriter Shontelle was her drill sergeant. Although she initially wanted to graduate from high school, she chose to pursue a musical career instead.

Career[]

She moved to the US in the early 2000s and signed to Jay Z's Def Jam label, releasing two studio albums Music of the Sun and A Girl Like Me, both of which charted in the Top 10 of the US Billboard 200 Album Charts, but it was with the release of her third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad that she became an international success, thanks to the lead single "Umbrella".  To date she has released eight studio albums and has sold in excess of 200 million records.

Aside from her music career, she has also entered the acting world.  Her first onscreen appearance was in the 2006 film Bring It On: All or Nothing and six years later she appeared in the Peter Berg-directed Battleship, based on the board game of the same name.  The film was both a box office and critical failure.  That same year she also appeared in the concert films of Coldplay and Katy Perry and the following year appeared in the British comedy film This is the End.

In 2014, she appeared in the film remake of the musical Annie alongside Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale and Cameron Diaz. Although it received two Golden Globe nominations it was criticized for its change in direction from the source material but was mostly praised for its performances. In 2015, she provided her voice for a character in the animated film Home.

Personal Life[]

Between 2008 and 2013, she had a highly publicized on-off relationship with singer Chris Brown and was the victim of a domestic abuse incident. Brown was placed under probation and they finally called it quits in 2013. She was also in a short relationship with Canadian rapper Drake.

Trivia[]

  • Her version of Marion is a similar, albeit more edgy, one of that portrayed by Janet Leigh in the original movie.
  • Although news of her casting caused a mixed reaction after it was revealed at Comic Con, Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin said that they had learned she was a big fan of the show via Twitter and therefore offered her the role.
  • The final season premiered on her 29th birthday.
  • She shares her birthday with her Bates Motel co-star Louis Ferreira.
