He first met Norman Bates when he sat down at his table for dinner. He was quite chatty and when he saw Norman looking at his turkey pot pie, the latter said that it reminded him of someone. Julian said he was there as his parents thought he was annoying. ('Til Death Do You Part)
Julian helped Norman break into the facility's office so that he could phone Dylan. When Norman later attempted to walk out of the building via the front door, he was stopped and Julian told him they could break out later that evening.
That evening, while the staff were distracted by some patients, Julian and Norman escaped via a window which Julian opened with a screw driver. As they tried to flag down a car, Julian told Norman that he had been at Pineview for the past four years. They were dropped at a strip club and although Norman appeared disinterested, a stripper took Julian to the VIP lounge. When "Mother" was being seduced by a stripper called Athena, they were interrupted by Julian, who had got into a fight with a bouncer.
When Dr. Edwards arrived to collect Norman, he said that Julian was taken to hospital with a broken rib and that he has run off several times before as he likes the idea of freedom and just wants them to come find him. (Lights of Winter)
When Norman found Julian had returned to Pineview, he was shocked to see his friend in bad shape, visibly bruised and clearly depressed from the beating he took the other night. Norman ran out in shock. (Refraction)
After Norman learned about Romero marrying Norma, he told Julian that he would be going home. Not believing him, Julian said that wasn't going to happen. Norman then went on to tell Julian that he would never leave Pineview because wasn't smart enough to get out. If he could craft a good facade to fool the people around him he could get out like Norman was prepared to do. Norman then left his friend feeling horrible about himself as he disposed of his uneaten food. (There's No Place Like Home)
